Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars that appear between the ages of seventeen to twenty-five. They erupt at the back of the gums and are mostly four in number (one at each corner of the gum). Just like the other teeth, wisdom teeth also need regular cleaning, checkups and X-rays to ensure that they are growing normally.
Wisdom teeth may need to be removed if they are impacted as they could become infected or cause damage to the neighboring teeth. Since it is an area that is not easy to clean with a brush or floss, it can cause food and plaque to get deposited, increasing the chances of decay. In some cases, a tumor or cyst may form at the base of an impacted wisdom tooth, causing damage to the teeth, surrounding nerves and other parts of your mouth and face.
If you experience severe discomfort or pain in your wisdom teeth, you must consult our office in NYC immediately. Dr. Papadakis and Dr. Gonzalez will examine your teeth and suggest whether you need extraction. In case an extraction is recommended, we will take an X-ray of your teeth in order to get a clearer picture of their position.
You will be under the effect of a local anesthetic during the procedure. Sedation may also be used for patients who suffer from dental anxiety. You will feel pressure as the tooth is pulled out from the socket. In some cases, your dentist may need to place a cut in the gum, and cut the tooth into smaller pieces for easier removal. Depending upon the complexity of the impaction, the procedure may take a few minutes or can even take twenty minutes or longer. It is common to experience a little discomfort and swelling after the extraction. This will heal in a few days.
